What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a fat removal surgery that sculpts the areas of your choosing. A few of the most popular areas to target with liposuction are the following:

  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Abdomen
  • Saddlebags
  • Thighs
  • Calves
  • Ankles
  • Breasts
  • Back
  • Arms
  • Neck

There are a few different liposuction techniques, the most common being tumescent liposuction.

During tumescent liposuction, our providers first inject a mixture of saline, lidocaine (a numbing agent), and epinephrine (a vasoconstrictor) into the targeted area. Then, we loosen the fat cells with a cannula through an incision in your skin. The cannula connects to a vacuum device that suctions the fat cells and fluid from the area.

Who should consider liposuction?

Liposuction is an elective cosmetic surgery, meaning it’s up to you to decide if you’re interested in removing body fat in this way. There are many specific reasons to consider liposuction, and you might consider it if you want to:

  • Treat gynecomastia (male breasts)
  • Make your clothes fit better
  • Improve your body proportions
  • Reduce areas of body fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise
  • Achieve natural-looking results

In order to be a good candidate for liposuction, you should have decent skin elasticity with little or no sagging skin in the treatment area. You should also make sure you’re at or near your goal body weight before getting liposuction, as the procedure is not a method for significant overall weight loss.

What is the downtime after liposuction?

Advanced modern liposuction techniques minimize the amount of inflammation and discomfort you experience from liposuction, but you still need some downtime to manage the wound and make a full recovery. The majority of liposuction patients can return to work within a week of their procedure with a one-week lifting restriction.

Right after liposuction at MDCS, we give you a compression garment to wear for the first week. You should wear a second compression garment, which we also give you, after the first week and up to three months post-operation. The garments control swelling and encourage your skin to contract.

At MDCS, we teach you to care for the incision site so you have minimal or no scarring once you fully heal.

Liposuction is the perfect treatment option to minimize fat bulges and finish with naturally sculpted curves. It’s also common to combine it with other cosmetic procedures.
