At MDCS Dermatology, we are committed to providing advanced diagnostic tools to help our patients achieve healthy, radiant skin. One such tool is the Woods Lamp Test, a simple yet effective method used by dermatologists to detect various skin conditions.

What is a Woods Lamp Test?

A Woods Lamp Test uses ultraviolet (UV) light to examine the skin. Under this specialized light, certain skin conditions exhibit fluorescence, allowing dermatologists to diagnose concerns that may not be visible to the naked eye. This non-invasive test is quick, painless, and performed in a darkened room to enhance the visibility of fluorescence.

What Can a Woods Lamp Test Detect?

The Woods Lamp Test is useful for diagnosing a wide range of skin conditions, including:

1. Fungal Infections

Some fungal infections of the skin, scalp, or nails fluoresce under a Woods Lamp. For example:

  • Tinea capitis (scalp ringworm) often appears as a bright greenish-blue fluorescence.

  • Certain fungal species, such as Microsporum, glow under UV light, helping dermatologists determine the type of infection and appropriate treatment.

2. Bacterial Infections

Some bacterial infections produce characteristic fluorescence under a Woods Lamp:

  • Pseudomonas infections glow green and are often found in wounds or moist environments.

  • Erythrasma, a bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium minutissimum, fluoresces a coral-red color.

3. Pigment Disorders

The Woods Lamp Test can help distinguish between different pigmentation conditions:

  • Vitiligo (a condition causing loss of skin pigment) fluoresces bright white, making it easier to detect early patches.

  • Melasma (dark patches on the skin) may show enhanced contrast, helping in treatment planning.

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and freckles may also be more clearly defined under UV light.

4. Other Skin Conditions

The Woods Lamp Test is also used to identify:

  • Porphyria, a rare metabolic disorder that causes the skin and urine to glow under UV light.

  • Head lice and nits, which may fluoresce white or bluish under the lamp.

  • Sun damage and early signs of skin aging, which may appear as irregular pigmentation under UV light.
